Waiheke + Michis Birthday

Wir sind wieder in Neuseeland!!!!!!!!!! :-)

Nach einer aufregenden Zeit in Mittelamerika sind wir mittlerweile in Auckland gelandet. Wir hatten uns schon sehr auf das Land und die vielen bekannten Gesichter gefreut. Dank Gerda's siebenmonatigen Praktikums in Auckland und Wellington sowie unseres Urlaubs vor drei Jahren haben wir bereits viele Freunde und Bekannte in Neuseeland. Es ist großartig, alle wiederzusehen. Am Flughafen wurden wir dann auch gleich mit bunten Blumenketten von Sally empfangen. Was für eine Begrüßung.

We are back in New Zealand!!!!!!!!! :-))))))

After an exciting time in Central America we're back in Auckland. We were very much looking forward to come back to this beautiful place with its great people. Thanks to Gerda's seven months' internship in Auckland and Wellington and our holiday three years ago, we have already a lot of friends in New Zealand. It's great meeting all the familiar faces again and being back in kiwiland. We got a warm welcome at the airport from Sally and some colourful flower garlands around our necks :-)

Die ersten Tage in Auckland haben wir bei Sally und Alan verbracht und konnten uns so in Ruhe nach einer geeigneten Unterkunft umsehen. Bei unserer Zimmersuche hatten wir viel Glück. Schon nach kurzer Zeit haben wir ein schönes Zimmer zentral in Auckland gefunden. Wir leben jetzt mit Jan und Abi sowie den beiden Katzen Elfie und Bubble zusammen. Wir haben ein schönes Zimmer, eine große Küche, einen kleinen Garten und eine tolle Terrasse.

We spend the first days in Auckland with Sally and Alan, which was fantastic. Our first task was to look for a nice room in central Auckland. Lucky us - after only looking for a couple of days we found a nice room with a great location. We are living now together with Jan and Abi and the two cats Elfie and Bubble. We have a great room, a large kitchen, a small backyard and a deck for sunny breakfasts.

Das erste Wochenende in Auckland haben wir mit Sally und Alan auf der wunderschönen Insel Waiheke verbracht. Zunächst einmal ein paar Infos über Waiheke. Waiheke ist nach der Great Barrier Insel die zweitgrößte Insel im Hauraki Golf. Sie hat ca. 8.000 Bewohner sowie weitere geschätzte 3.400 Bewohner, die eine Zweit- oder Ferienwohnung auf der Insel haben. Von Auckland braucht man nur 35 min mit der Fähre und ist dann in einer anderen Welt. Auf Waiheke ist alles etwas entspannter als in "the big city", es gibt hier keine einzige Ampel, siebzehn Weingüter und die schönsten Sandstrände der Gegend. Wer würde hier nicht gerne eine "bach (Wochenendhäuschen)" haben.

Wir haben auf Waiheke in einem kleinen, niedlichen Ferienhäuschen das schöne Wetter, Früchte aus Sally's Garten und den guten Wein der Region genossen. Entlang der Küste haben wir eine tolle Wanderung gemacht und unglaublich luxuriöse Ferienwohnungen gesehen - mit Hubschrauberlandeplatz versteht sich! Solch eine Ferienwohnung wollen wir später natürlich auch mal haben ;-) (Hubschrauberlandeplatz muss nicht unbedingt sein). Waiheke ist darüber hinaus für seine guten Weinberge bekannt, auf denen häufig auch ein Restaurant betrieben wird. Eines dieser Restaurants ist im "Gaudi-Stil" gehalten. Dort haben wir uns zur Vorfeier auf Michi's Geburtstag ein köstliches Abendessen gegönnt.

Sally and Alan invited us to spend our first weekend in Auckland with them on the beautiful island of Waiheke. What should you know about Waiheke? The island is the second-largest in the Hauraki Gulf after Great Barrier Island. It's only a 35 min ferry ride from Auckland CBD to Waiheke. It is the most populated, with nearly 8,000 permanent residents plus another estimated 3,400 who have second or holiday homes on the island. Nowadays, multimillionaires rub shoulders with the oldtime hippies and bohemian artists who gave the island its green repute. Leaving Auckland, it does feel like being in another world. It is way more relaxed than the "big city", there is no single traffic light, seventeen boutique wineries to visit and enjoy the day and some of the region's best sandy beaches. What do you want more? Most likely a bach on Waiheke ;-).

We stayed on Waiheke in a little nice cottage and enjoined the good weather, fruits and veggies from Sally's garden and good wine from the region. We made a great hike along the coast where we saw some very luxurious holiday homes - with helicopter landing site! We´d like to have such a holiday home later on as well :-) - don't need to have the helicopter landing site though. Waiheke is also known for its fine vineyards, which often operate a restaurant. One of these restaurants is built in "Gaudi-style". We had a delicious dinner there to pre-celebrate Michi's birthday.

Auf der Insel haben wir auch Michis Geburtstag gefeiert. Von Gerda wurde er pünktlich um 0.00 Uhr mit einem Geburstagsständchen und weiteren tollen Geschenken überrascht. Am nächsten Morgen wurde "Birthday-Boy" dann von Sally und Alan mit einem tollen Frühstück geweckt. Im Laufe des Tages haben wir in einem weiteren Weinberg sehr lecker gegessen. Es war mit Sicherheit ein unvergesslicher Geburtstag in einer sehr ungewöhnlichen Umgebung. Es war das erste Mal, dass Michi an seinem Geburtstag kurze Hosen trug :-) 

We also celebrated Michi's birthday on Waiheke. Gerda surprised the birthday boy with traditional birthday songs and presents at midnight. On the next morning Sally and Alan woke the "birthday boy" up with a great breakfast overlooking the sea. Good food followed. We had a fabulous lunch together in another fine vineyard. It was certainly a memorable birthday in a very unusual environment. It was the first time that Michi was wearing shorts on his birthday :-)

Wir ihr sehen könnt, sind wir sehr gut in Neuseeland angekommen. Jetzt freuen wir uns auf die Abenteuer, die uns dort erwarten.

As you can see, we had a warm welcome and a perfect start in New Zealand. Now we are looking forward to our adventuresin kiwiland.
