Rugby + Basic Bush School

Last weekend was quite exciting! We did some 'wild things', which we have to tell you about.

On a Friday night, Michi went to a rugby game (you have to see at least one when you are in New Zealand). Rugby is New Zealand's national sport. People are very proud of their national team, the "All Blacks". They became world champion last year and they are very well known for their dance before each game, the haka. (see: “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjVqZkDZrgg”).

Michi liked the game very much. Many thanks to Jeremy, who explained him all the little details of the game.

On Saturday we went to a two-day hike called "Basic Bush School" from the Auckland University Tramping Club. We expected an easy hike and that we learn some skills about tramping (although we are used to go tramping in Europe). To be honest, we didn´t know in detail what was supposed to happen there. The hike started very easy. We walked along the beach and did some orientation exercises with a map and a compass. That was very good, because it´s very handy to have some orientation skills.

After these easy exercises the true hike started. We had to cross a swamp, where we walked through waist-height water. First, we thought we only have to walk 50m through the swamp. Unfortunately, we recognised that we had to spend the next 4-5 hours in this area. At some points, we reached land, but these areas were always full of thorn bushes - yay! The weather did fit to this challenging hike, it began to rain - wet from beneath and above! Just before we´ve reached the camp, we had to cross a deeper stream. The stream was deeper than we thought. Michi fell into a hole and was for a short time completely under water. We arrived at our camp wet and dirty, which was just a toilet and a simple shelter. It was a bit like a mudbath to built up our tent. I have to say that we were looking forward to our warm sleeping bags. However, before we could go to bed we had to go into the dark forest and simulated an emergency. We should assume that we were lost on a day trip and had to spend the night outside. We built an emergency shelter with dried branches. After this last exercise, we were happy to go into our dry and warm tent. Some tough guys spent voluntarily the night outside.

Our second day started with crossing a river. First they taught us some theoretical knowledge. After that we did a real river crossing. Due to heavy rains during the night the trails were very muddy and we couldn´t identify the original colour of our shoes. On the further hike we did another orientation exercise. We did "bush bashing" which led us directly into the undergrowth. In the afternoon of the second day the sun came out again. We got some great views and concluded our hike with the visit of two caves. When we arrived at home, we had the best hot shower ever!! :-)

The hike was certainly adventurous and we had heaps of fun. We have a lot of tramping skills now, as you can imagine. We don´t know if we want to do a hike like this again but who knows. First, we have to get rid of all the mud from this tour :-)

Viele liebe Grüße / Cheers

Gerdas Birthday

Hi Folks,

Day gebeb (also mal aufgepasst liebe Ahnungslose):

We also celebrated Gerda's birthday here in Auckland. Gerda's birthday takes place (like every year) on St. Patrick's Day. It is an Irish holiday, which we don´t really celebrate (apart from Irish pubs) in Germany. However, this holiday is quite hugely celebrated in New Zealand. Therefore, we like to give all the ones who are clueless some additional information:

Saint Patrick's Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on 17 March. It commemorates Saint Patricks (c. AD 387–461), the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official feast day in the early 17th century, and has gradually become a celebration of Irish culture in general. The day is generally characterised by wearing of green attire, public parades and processions and drinking a lot of alcohol (!!!). Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand - as you can see Irish people are all over the world.

We also went to St Patrick´s day and of course had a party ;-)

We have celebrated Gerda's birthday and St. Patrick's Day with sunshine and BBQ in our garden. The party guests were of course accordingly dressed in green. We celebrated Gerda´s birthday and St. Pat's with delicious German food and a some beers ;-)

Also liebe Leute, wenn ihr mal wieder einen Grund zum Feiern sucht ist St.Patrick´s Day mit Sicherheit eine gute Wahl ;-)

Folks, if you were looking for a reason to have a party, St. Patrick's Day would be certainly a good choice ;-)

Viele liebe Grüße / Cheers

First days in Auckland

Aloha,

It's great being back in Auckland. It was great to catch up with all our friends and enjoy the end of summer. We've got a little bit like "daily routine" now. Gerda is working for SHORE & Whariki, where she is already part of two projects, and Michi has started a language course. This means that we get up early (yes, EARLY) in the morning, go for a run, have breakfast together and then ride with our bikes to the city center. Yes, it is true, we ride every day to the city center by bike. We have bought two very cool bikes, which we use to dash through Auckland :-)))))) We love it, although you sometime have to fight for your right on the street! It's not comparable to the cyclists' paradise 'Holland'. You need to be out there with your reflective vest and a helmet (yes, wearing a helmet is mandatory) to get your way on the bus line. Separate bike lines are pretty much nonexistent in Auckland, nevertheless, we're super lucky and have a cycle line nearly all the way to the office. Really getting into cycling again, which is great.

We use our free time on weekends and evenings to do fun things in and around town. We also decided to join the Auckland University's climbing and tramping club. Now we can go climbing regularly and do some great hiking trips (guided by the experienced tramping crew). We do a lot of stuff with our friends. Just recently, we enjoined a great (free) gig of 'The Phoenix Foundation' at the harbor together with Ali and had a yummy BBQ afterwards at his place.

We made a great trip to Piha Beach with Kathie and Ali. Piha Beach is a surfer's paradise with beautiful small hiking trails, a beautiful countryside and secluded beaches. After a long hike we were invited to a nice dinner by Kathie´s parents in their holiday home. It was a beautiful day with super nice people, which just perfectly ended with a beautiful sunset.

Our landlord Jan invited us to a huge family dinner. She cooked a very impressive meal and introduced us to her family. Michi loved the incredibe roast. The time of being a "Central America-vegetarian" is now apparently over ;-)

Who could have guessed that Auckland is build on about 50 volcanoes (Note: we can't get rid of volcanoes). These take the form of cones, lakes, lagoons, islands and depressions, and several have produced extensive lava flows. The individual volcanoes are all considered extinct, although the volcanic field itself is merely dormant. One of these extinct volcanoes is the island Rangitoto, which is close to the harbor of Auckland. Rangitoto is Māori and is short for "Ngā Rangi-i-totongia-a Tama-te-kapua" ('The days of the bleeding of Tama-te-kapua'). Tama-te-kapua was the captain of the Arawa waka (canoe) and was badly wounded on the island, at a lost battle with the Tainui iwi (tribe) at Islington Bay.

The island is a national park and a hiking area today. We explored the island by pure sunshine and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and the magnificent view of Auckland.

On another weekend we went with original pasific outfits (thanks to Jan) to the “Pasifica Festival”. The different pacific islands (Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Tokelau, Niue, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Tahiti, Fiji and Aotearoa) celebrated on the festival their culture and sold native stuff and food (yumm). The festival attracted an incredibe number of people (more than 200,000!!). That led to a shortage of parking spots. Clever residents rented their garden as parking spots for 10 NZD each... We did not have a parking problem with our bikes though. We enjoyed the festival a lot ...  especially Michi was highly motivated and maybe a bit "overdressed" with his lei and flower shirt ;-)

Humus, Fattoush, Tabbouleh, Flatbread, Batata harra, Aryes al kofta, Mouhallabia

Our good friend Ali is a passionate cook. He offered us to cook some Lebanese specialties in our flat. We just had to buy the ingredients and gave him a hand while cooking. He has prepared a great meal for us and our friends. A big thank you to Ali. You're going to be a 5-star chef in the nearby future - keep the good work up!!!!!!!

Here's the mouth-watering menu:

Humus, Fattoush, Tabbouleh, Flatbread, Batata harra, Aryes al kofta, Mouhallabia

There is lots to do in Auckland even on rainy days. On such a particular rainy Sunday, we visited the Auckland Museum. The museum offers a lot of different perspectives. You can find information about the history of New Zealand, the second world war, marine animals and a lot more. As mentioned before, Auckland is built on more than 50 volcanoes. The museum simulates a volcanic eruption. On one side the simulation was very impressive on the other side the simulation was very frightening. It's good to know that a volcanic eruption in Auckland is very unlikely!!!!

We hope you got an idea of our little "daily routine" in Auckland. Once we have our next adventures we will let you know.

Viele liebe Grüße / Cheers
