Grand Canyon

Hallo Leute,

Ein Highlight jagt das Nächste. Nach einer aufregenden Zeit in Las Vegas sind wir wieder in einen National Park gefahren. Wir sind nicht in irgendeinen Nationalpark gefahren, sondern zu einem der bekannteste Nationalparks überhaupt... dem Grand Canyon. Hier ein paar Basisdaten: Der Grand Canyon ist eine 450 Kilometer lange Schlucht, die während Jahrmillionen vom Colorado River ins Gestein des Colorado-Plateaus gegraben wurde. Der Canyon zählt zu den großen Naturwundern auf unserer Erde und wird jedes Jahr von rund fünf Millionen Menschen besucht. An der breitesten Stelle ist er 30 Kilometer breit - und unserer Meinung nach unglaublich beeindruckend.

One highlight was chasing the next. After an exciting time in Las Vegas, we went to the next national park. We have not gone to "any" national park, we went to one of the most famous national parks ... the Grand Canyon. Here are a few basic facts about this amazing canyon: The Grand Canyon is a 450-kilometer-long gorge, which was excavated over millions of years by the Colorado River into the rocks of the Colorado Plateau. The canyon is one of the great natural wonders on earth and is visited every year by around five million people. At its widest point, the canyon is 30 kilometers wide.

Die folgenden Bilder können lediglich eine ungefähre Vorstellung liefern, wie beeindruckend der Grand Canyon ist. Seine unglaubliche Weite kann man kaum in einem Bild erfassen. Wir können nur jedem empfehlen, sich denn Grand Canyon mal selbst anzuschauen. Vorab aber schon mal ein kleiner Vorgeschmack. Wir haben einen Wanderung zum "Skeleton" gemacht. Dieser Punkt liegt ungefähr auf halber Strecke zum Colorado River. Eine Wanderung bis ganz hinunter zum Fluß ist an einem Tag (fast) nicht möglich (man bekommt ungefähr eine Vorstellung davon, wie groß und tief der Canyon ist).

The following pictures can only give you an approximate idea of how impressive the Grand Canyon is. His incredible size can hardly be captured in a picture. We can only recommend to go there and check out the Canyon by yourself. In the meantime we will give you a foretaste of what it is like. We hiked down to the "skeleton". This point is approximately half way down to the Colorado River. A hike all the way down to the river and back is (nearly) not possible in one day (due to this fact, you hopefully get an idea about how big and deep the canyon is).

Wie ihr seht hatten wir einen absolut perfekten Tag im Grand Canyon.

As you can see, we had a perfectly great day in the Grand Canyon.

 

"Schietwetter" und "Hamburg" waren natürlich auch am Start ;-)

  

Zum Sonnenuntergang waren wir wieder rechtzeitig auf dem Plateu. Es war ein herrliches Spiel der Lichter/Schatten und Farben... Bilder sagen mehr als Worte...

At sunset we were back on the plateau. The sunset provided us with a wonderful play of light/shadow and colors...  we let the pictures speak.

Was für ein Glück wir mit dem Wetter hatten, wurde uns dann am nächsten Tag bewußt. Wir wurden von einem Wintereinbruch überrascht. Es hat in kürzester Zeit 20-30 cm Neuschnee gegeben. Wir waren bereits auf unserem Weg nach San Diego... wie ihr euch vorstellen könnt, führte der Neuschnee zu einem entsprechenen Verkehrschaos... Schneeballschlacht auf der Autobahn inklusive (da der Verkehr komplett stillstand). Auf unser Auto war aber zu dieser Zeit "noch" Verlass (später dazu mehr), daher konnten wir das Schneechaos meistern.

On the next day we saw how lucky we had been with the weather. We were quite surprised by the onset of winter. It snowed approximately 20-30 cm of fresh snow in a really short time. We were already on our way to San Diego ... as you can imagine, the snow led to a traffic jam ... including a snowball fight on the highway (as the traffic stood still completely). Since our car (still) worked well during this time (more on this later) we were able to cope with the snow chaos.

Hoover Dam und Mike O'Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

Hallo ihr Lieben,

nach einer aufregenden Zeit in Las Vegas sind wir (leider ohne den grossen Gewinn!!) weiter in Richtung Grand Canyon gefahren. Auf dem Weg zum Grand Canyon liegt der Hoover Dam, den wir natürlich "unter die Lupe" genommen haben. Ein wirkliches Meisterwerk der Ingenieurskunst. Hier ein paar Eckdaten:

Die Hoover-Talsperre (englisch: Hoover Dam, ursprünglich als Boulder Dam bezeichnet) staut den Colorado, der hier die Grenze zwischen Arizona und Nevada bildet, zum Lake Mead auf. Der aufgestaute See weist eine Fläche von 63.900 Hektar (andere Angabe: 69.000 Hektar), eine Länge von rund 170 km und eine maximale Tiefe von etwa 180 Metern auf. Mit seinem Speicherinhalt von rund 35 Milliarden Kubikmetern ist er der größte Stausee der USA. Gebaut wurde die Hoover-Staumauer zwischen 1931 und 1935 als Bogengewichtsmauer mit einer Höhe von 221 Metern und einer oberen Dicke von etwa 14 Metern. Die untere Dicke beträgt 201 Meter. Die Staumauer besteht aus rund 2,6 Millionen Kubikmeter Beton und 43.500 Tonnen Stahl.

After an exciting time in Las Vegas (unfortunately without the big win) we went on to the Grand Canyon. On the way we crossed the impressive Hoover Dam, a true masterpiece of engineering. Here are some facts:

The Hoover Dam (English: Hoover Dam, originally known as Boulder Dam) dammed the Colorado River, which forms the border between Arizona and Nevada, Lake Mead. The lake has an area of ​​63 900 hectares, a length of about 170 km and a maximum depth of approximately 180 meters. With its storage capacity of approximately 35 billion cubic meters, it is the largest reservoir in the United States. The construction of the Hoover Dam is 221 meters tall and has a top thickness of about 14 meters. The lower thickness is 201 meters. The dam consists approximately 2.6 million cubic meters of cements and 43 500 tons of steel.

Mindestens genau so beeindruckend ist die Brücke, die in der Nähe des Hoover Dams über die Colorado Schlucht führt. Im folgenden auch ein paar Daten und Bilder zur imposanten Mike O'Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Brücke - tataaaaaa:

Die Bruecke wurde am 19. Oktober 2010 eröffnet und ist eine vierspurige Autobahnbrücke zur Überquerung des Colorado River. Diese Brücke ist etwa 48 Kilometer südöstlich von Las Vegas, Nevada. Mit ihren 260 Meter über dem Colorado River, ist diese Brücke die zweithöchste Brücke in den Vereinigten Staaten, nach der Royal Gorge Bridge. Erbaut als Teil des Hoover Dam Bypass-Projekt, kostete die Brücke 114.000.000 $. Eine beachtliche Summe!

At least as impressive as the Hoover Dam is the bridge that crosses the Colorado Canyon. In the following you will find some facts and pictures of the imposing Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

Opened on October 19, 2010, this four-lane highway bridge provides a crossing of the Colorado River for U.S. Route 93, linking Nevada with Arizona about 1,600 feet (about 500 meters) downstream from the Hoover Dam. This bridge is located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. At 840 feet (260 meters) above the Colorado River, this bridge is the second-highest one in the United States, following the Royal Gorge Bridge. Built as part of the Hoover Dam Bypass Project, which was successfully completed within budget at a cost of $240 million, the bridge portion cost $114 million (2010 prices).

Jetzt hoffen wir einfach mal, dass ihr mindestens genau so beeindruckt seid, wie wir es waren.

Las Vegas

Hallo Allerseits/Hi Everyone,

nach zwei schönen Tagen im Yosemite National Park ging es für uns weiter in die größte Stadt Nevadas – Las Vegas „the Entertainment Capital of the World“. Eine Stadt der Superlative. Las Vegas ist bekannt als Spielerparadis der USA – hier spielt die Uhrzeit keine Rolle denn es wird rund um die Uhr gespielt - 7 Tage die Woche. Der Las Vegas Boulevard, genannt „Strip“, ist gespickt mit bunten Leuchtreklamen, Spielhallen und Mega-Hotels die einen oftmals nur staunen lassen. Die Hotels sind Nachbauten in riesigem Ausmaß von Venedig (durch die Eingangshalle fließt ein Fluss auf dem Gondeln und dazugehörige Gondolieries schippern), Eiffelturm, ins klassische Rom im Caesar’s Palace und dem Springbrunnenspektakel vor dem Bellagio. Die unzähligen Spielcasinos beherbergen eine geballte Ladung an Automaten, einarmigen Banditen und Daddel Maschinen. Es leuchtet, dudelt und blinkt aus allen Richtungen und tummelt sich das Leben. Wir haben allerdings die Finger von den Slot Machines gelassen.

After having two great days in Yosemite National Park, we drove to the largest city in Nevada – Las Vegas “The Entertainment Capital of the World”. A city of superlatives. Las Vegas is known as players paradise in the US – time does not play a role here as you can play all night long – 7 days a week. The Las Vegas Boulevard, known as “The Strip” is full of colorful neon lights, casinos and mega-hotels – we were quite astonished! The hotels are large-scale replications of Venice (through the entrance hall flows a river with gondolas and gondoliers), the Eiffel Tower, the classical Rome in Caesar’s Palace and the spectacular fountains in front of the Bellagio. The countless casinos accommodate heaps of slot machines and gambling tables. Everything lights up, blinks and flashes and life’s buzzing. Nevertheless, we resisted and didn’t touch the slot machines.

Wenn man nicht zum Spielen nach Las Vegas kommt, wozu denn dann? Zum Heiraten! In Vegas gibt es unzählige Wedding Chapels, die es den Heiratswütigen einfach machen den schönsten Tag des Lebens schnell und günstig über die Bühne zu bringen. Für ca. 20$ erhält man die Hochzeitserlaubnis und nach Vorzeigen des Reisepasses und der Beantwortung eines kurzen Fragebogens kann man bzw. frau auch schon heiraten. 

If you do not come to play in Las Vegas, why would you come? To get married! There is a countless number of wedding chapels in Las Vegas, which makes it easy for people (wanting to get married) to get the most beautiful day in life done – easy, quick and affordable. For about $ 20 you get the wedding licence and upon presentation of your passport and answering a short questionnaire, you are ready to go!

 

Wir haben weder geheiratet noch haben wir Geld verspielt – wir haben uns einfach das Treiben und die Mega-Hotels in Las Vegas angeschaut – und damit waren wir mehr als beschäftigt.

We neither got married nor have we lost money – we just watched the goings-on and the mega-hotels in Las Vegas – and with doing so we are more than busy ;-)
