Great Ocean Road & South East Coast

Nach spannenden Tagen in der Metropole Melbourne war es Zeit die großartige Landschaft in der „näheren Umgebung“ (was alles relativ ist in Australien) zu entdecken. Unser Roadtrip führte uns zunächst entlang der Great Ocean Road. Die Great Ocean Road ist vor allem für ihre beeindruckende Steilküste bekannt. Wir haben aber zunächst die artenreiche australische Tierwelt kennen gelernt. Auf einem Golfplatz haben wir das australische Markenzeichen entdeckt. Dutzende Kängurus hoppelten gemütlich über einen gepflegten Golfplatz... ziemlich cool fanden wir…

After having some great days in Melbourne, it was time to explore the spectacular landscape of Australia in the surroundings. Our road trip took us first to the Great Ocean Road. The Great Ocean Road is known for its impressive cliffs and coastline. On the way to the spectacular cliffs, we run into Australian wildlife. We found the national animal of Australia on a golf course. Many kangaroos hopped comfortably over the grass... it was certainly enjoyable for us to watch them.

Am nächsten Tag machten wir uns auf den Weg zu einem Leuchtturm. Dabei sind wir zunächst auf eine wilde Kuh gestoßen. Michi hatte die Situation als „Junge vom Bauernhof“ jedoch jederzeit im Griff ;-). Zum Leuchtturm haben wir es nicht geschafft (und es lag nicht an der wilden Kuh). Dafür haben wir plötzlich ganz viele Koalas entdeckt. Diese waren teilweise sehr neugierig und machten auf uns einen sehr relaxten Eindruck... Koala müsste man sein ;-) 

On the next day we wanted to hike to a lighthouse, which is located on the southern tip. On our way we met a cow, which was a little bit crazy. But there was no reason to worry as Michi as a „former farm boy“ had the situation perfectly under control :-). We actually never made it to the lighthouse and it was due to the cow. BUT we discovered many koalas =))) which was one of the highlights of the day. They were hanging all over the trees like fluffy apples... gosh what a life :-)

Nach diesen tierischen Abstechern haben wir dann die weltbekannte Steilküste der Great Ocean Road erreicht. Der bekannteste Abschnitt sind die "Zwölf Apostel". Die Apostel entstanden durch Erosion. Die extremen Wetterbedingungen führten zu Tunneln in dem weichen Kalkstein, die parallel zur Küste verliefen. Weitere Erosionen führten schließlich dazu, dass auch das Dach der Tunnel einstürzte und lediglich die einsamen Felsformationen stehen blieben. Diese "Apostel" sind teilweise bis zu 45 Meter hoch! Die Formation hieß ursprünglich "Die Sau mit den Ferkeln" (Die "Muttonbird Insel" war die Sau und die kleineren Felsformationen die Ferkel). Später wurde der Abschnitt aus touristischen Zwecken in die "Zwölf Apostel" umbenannt obwohl es nur neun gab.

After these animal encounters, we reached the most famous spot on the Great Ocean Road - the "Twelve Apostles". The apostles were formed by erosion: the harsh weather conditions from the Southern Ocean gradually eroded the soft limestone to form caves in the cliffs, which then became arches, which in turn collapsed; leaving rock stacks up to 45 metres high. The site was known as the Sow and Piglets ("Muttonbird Island" was the Sow, and the smaller rock stacks the Piglets). It was renamed to "The Apostles" for tourism purposes. The formation eventually became known as the "Twelve Apostles", despite only ever having nine.

 
Auch die weiteren Felsformationen London Bridge, Bay of Island etc. waren beeindruckend. Auf Grund der stürmischen See gab es auch sehr viel Schiffsunglücke entlang der Küste. Auf einem Wanderweg wird die Geschichte der "Loch Arch" erzählt. Nach einer dreimonatigen Reise von England kenterte das Schiff am 1. Juni 1878. Von den 54 Passagieren und Besatzungsmitgliedern überlebten nur zwei: Tom Pearce, eines Schiffslehrling und Eva Carmichael, eine Irin die mit ihrer Familie nach Australien auswandern wollte. Laut Gedenkstätte wurde Pearce an Land gespült und rettete anschließend Eva Carmichael aus dem Wasser nachdem er ihre Hilferufe hörte. Anschließend vermutete die Presse eine Romanze zwischen den beiden jungen Menschen. Das stimmte jedoch nicht, da Eva Carmichael wieder nach Irland zurückkehrte. Offensichtlich gab es also auch schon früher die "Regenbogenpresse" :-) 

The other rock formations London Bridge, Bay of Island, etc. were also very impressive. Due to the stormy sea, there are many shipwrecks along the coast. We could read the story of the "Loch Arch" on a hiking trail. The ship ran aground on 1 June 1878 approaching the end of a three-month journey from England to Melbourne. Of the fifty-four passengers and crew, only two survived the tragedy: Tom Pearce, a ship's apprentice, and Eva Carmichael, a young Irishwoman immigrating with her family. According to memorials at the site, Pearce was washed ashore, and rescued Carmichael from the water after hearing her cries for help. After that, the press believed in a romance between them. However, that was not true. Obviously, there was already a "gutter press" in place ;-)

Unser Roadtrip führte uns die nächsten Tage entlang der Süd-Ost Küste nach Canberra. Auf dem Weg sind wir an wunderschönen Stränden vorbeigekommen, habe weitere Tiere beobachten können und durften tolle Sonnenuntergänge erleben. Ein spezielles Erlebnis hatten wir, als plötzlich mitten auf der Straße ein Baum lag. Offensichtlich war er dem Sturm zum Opfer gefallen und die Straße war beidseitig blockiert. Das Problem hat eine junge Frau gelöst. Wie selbstverständlich hat sie aus ihrem Kofferraum eine Motorsäge herausgeholt und den Weg wieder freigesägt. Ziemlich cool... eine Motorsäge gehört in Australien offensichtlich in den Erste Hilfe Koffer ;-)

Our road trip took as the next days along the south-east coast up to Canberra. On our way we passed beautiful beaches,  saw even more animals and were able to watch some great sunsets. We had a special experience, when there was suddenly a big tree in the middle of the street. It was the result of a storm and the road was blocked in both directions. The problem was solved by a young lady. As a matter of course she took a chainsaw out of her trunk and cut the way free again. Pretty cool ... in Australia a chainsaw is obviously part of the first aid kit ;-)

Wie ihr sehen könnt, hatten wir einen richtig tollen Roadtrip. Auch an das Fahren auf der falschen Seite hatten wir uns schnell gewöhnt ;-) 

As you can see we had a great roadtrip along the Australian coast. Even the driving on the wrong side of the road was not a problem ;-)

Wir haben versprochen, dass wir Melbourne für euch erkunden. Wir können euch jetzt ein paar Empfehlungen geben, damit eurer Aufenthalt auch euren Vorstellungen entspricht :-)

We promised, that we will explore Melbourne for you. Now we can give you a few recommendations to make your stay perfect. :-)

1. Gesichts-Restaurant / The Face Restaurant
Wir waren zwar nur kurz in Melbourne, haben die Zeit allerdings sehr effektiv genutzt. Wir haben nämlich bereits unsere gemeinsame Geschäftsidee umgesetzt und das "Gesichts Restaurant" gegründet. Wir hatten in kurzer Zeit schon sehr viel Erfolg, so dass ihr euch auf sehr viele Filalen freuen könnt. Viel Spaß beim Verzehr der unterschiedlichen Gesichtern.

We were in Melbourne only a short time, however, we have used this time very effectively. We have implemented our business idea and founded the "face restaurant". We had great success, therefore you can look forward to many "face restaurants". Have fun eating the different faces ;-).

2. Lebensmittelversorgung / Catering
Falls ihr euch Sorgen gemacht habt, dass ihr in Australien nicht genügend zum Essen bekommt, können wir euch beruhigen. In Australien hat deutsch Supermarktqualität Einzug gehalten und ihr könnt euch auf den deutschen Qualitätssupermarkt "Aldi" freuen :-) 

If you worry, that you don't get enough to eat in Australia, we can calm you down. In Australia, you will find the famous German supermarket "Aldi". Shopping there will make you happy :-) It certainly made Michi very happy!

3. Salami
Nun zum wichtigsten Punkt. Franky, wir haben für dich die besten Salami Stände der Stadt abgesucht. Du kannst dich auf eine wahre Vielfalt freuen. Wir empfehlen dir den "Queen Victoria Market", dort wirst du dich wie im Schlaraffenland fühlen :-)

Now to the most important thing in Melbourne. Franky, we have searched the whole city for the best salami. You can look forward to a great diversity. We can warmly recommend the "Queen Victoria Market“, there you will feel like in heaven - trust us :-)

Melbourne

Hallo Leute,  Hi guys,

Wir sind in Australien angekommen, ein wahres Outdoor-Paradies. Zunächst haben wir mit Melbourne jedoch eine tolle Stadt erkundet. Wir hatten einen interessanten Start. Wir haben unseren Aufenthalt mit "schwarz fahren" begonnen. Zur Belohnung wurden wir in der Bahn von einem netten Engländer zu einer Party eingeladen... sehr nett die Leute in Australien :-) Am Wochenende haben wir uns mit Suzanne zum Frühstücken in Fritzroy getroffen und sind über den Queen Victoria Markt geschlendert.

We are now in Australia, a true outdoor paradise. However, we started our Australia experience with the city of Melbourne. We had a good start in Melbourne and began our stay with "dodging the fare" - unwanted of course as the ticket machine was not working. As a reward, we were invited by a friendly English guy to a party ... 'what nice people live in Australia' we thought :-) On the weekend, we met with Suzanne for breakfast in Fritzroy (Gerda's favourite suburb) and explored Queen Victoria Market.

Wir haben viel über Melbourne gelernt. Wir haben das Parlament kennen gelernt, haben uns die Geschichte des Goldrausches angesehen und etwas über die Ursprünge der Stadt gelernt. Melbourne wurde von John Batman gegründet. Daher hieß die Stadt ursprünglich auch "Batmania". In Zeiten von "The dark knight rises" wäre das sicherlich auch heute noch ein passender Name ;-).

We learned a lot about Melbourne. We visited the parliament, got some information about the Gold Rush and learned interesting stuff about the history of the city. Melbourne was founded by John Batman. Therefore, the city was originally named "Batmania". In times of "The Dark Knight Rises" that would still be a proper name ;-).

In Melbourne haben wir auch 'Couchsurfing' gemacht. Wir durften drei Tage mit Philipp, Ben und Elodie verbringen. Wir hatten eine großartige Zeit und jede Menge Spaß. Ben hat uns seine Erlebnisse aus Deutschland geschildert. Es ist sehr spannend, Deutschland mal aus der Perspektive eines Australiers zu sehen. Folgende Dinge haben ihn besonders beeindruckt:

1. ICE
"Der Zug sieht aus wie ein Raumschiff und ist super schnell. Als wir paralell zur Autobahn gefahren sind, konnte ich beobachten wie die richtig schnellen Autos an den anderen vorbei rasten um dann gleichzeitig festzustellen, dass wir wiederum diese Autos überholen...Scheiße mann, wie schnell sind wir? Die digitale Anzeige zeigte 300 km/h...Hammer. Trotzdem war es so leise, dass ich meinen Gegenüber hören konnte, wie er die Zeitung umblätterte!!!! Dann habe ich mich an die australische Züge erinnert....ratter ratter ratter :-) "

2. Radfahren
"Radfahren in Australien bedeutet, dass du einen Ganzkörper Rennanzug sowie einen Aerohelm trägst und auf dem neusten Rad die Straße entlang rast. Du klingeslt die Leute, die nur 30km/h fahren, aus dem Weg. In Deutschland fahren sie alle, perfekt gestylt, gemütlich auf ihren Hollandrändern... das gefällt mir“

Aber vorsichtig, nicht ganz jugendfrei ;-) 

Zu guter letzt hat uns Philipp einen spirituellen Tanz empfohlen. Wir haben daher eine sehr interessante Erfahrung mit "Five Rythm" gemacht.

We did couchsurfing in Melbourne. We were able to surf the couch of Philip, Ben and Elodie for three days. We had a great time and lots of fun. Ben told us about his experiences in Germany. It is exciting to see Germany what an Australian experienced in our home country. The following things have impressed Ben:

1. ICE
"The train looks like a spaceship. As we drove parallel to the highway, I could see how the really fast cars on the motorway overtook the other cars, just to discover that we even overtook these cars ... shit man, I thought, how fast are we going? The digital display showed 300 km/h...unbelievable!! However, it was so quiet that I could hear my opponent turning the newspaper!! Then I reminded the Australian trains ...ratter ratter ratter "

2. Cycling
"Cycling in Australia means, that you wear a full-body racing suit and an aero helmet. You are cycling on a brand new racing bike and shout people away from the cycling lane when they only drive 30km/h. In Germany, cyclist are styled like they go out and they cycle very slow on their comfortable Holland bikes... I love that "

But be careful, it's only for the grownups ;-)

Phlipp has recommended us a spiritual dance. Therefore, we had a very interesting experience with "Five Rhythm" and enjoyed the atmosphere.

Melbourne gilt als Künstlerstadt. Wir hatten das Gefühl, dass in Melbourne jeder eine Art Künstler ist. Dies spiegelt sich dann in unglaublich viel 'Street Art' wieder.

Melbourne is a city of artists. We had the feeling that everyone in Melbourne is some kind of artist. This is reflected not only in the many art galleries but also in an incredible amount of street art. 

Jaesuk und seine Familie waren zufällig zur gleichen Zeit wie wir in Melbourne. So konnten wir nochmal gemeinsam zum Essen gehen und unsere Reiseerfahrungen austauschen. Ihr Urlaub geht jetzt zu Ende, wir haben Glück und können noch eine ganze Weile reisen :-)

Jaesuk and his family were in Melbourne at the same time as we were. Therefore, we could go out for dinner a last time and share our travel experiences. Their travelling is coming to an end now, we're very lucky as we can still continue this great life for a while :-)

Zu guter letzt haben wir den Strand von St. Kilda besucht. Eine nette Abwechslung zur Großstadt.
 

Last but not least, we visited the beach of St. Kilda. A nice change from the big city life.

Wir hatten eine tolle Zeit in Melbourne. Jetzt freuen wir uns auf die Great Ocean Road.

We had a lot of fun in Melbourne. Now we are looking forward to getting onto the Great Ocean Road.
