Ayutthaya & Lopburi/ Thailand

Hallo Leute / Hi guys,

We are still on a kind of a historical journey through Thailand. We have reached Ayutthaya. Today, about 60,000 people live there. Due to the population one could think, that Ayutthaya is a small and unimportant city. Far from it! Ayutthaya has a very impressive history. The city was founded in 1350 by King U Thong, who went there to escape a smallpox outbreak in Lopburi (this is the next stop on our trip) and proclaimed it the capital of his kingdom, often referred to as the Ayutthaya kingdom or Siam. Ayutthaya became the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai (where we've been before). It is estimated that Ayutthaya by the year 1600 had a population of about 300,000, with the population perhaps reaching 1,000,000 around 1700, making it one of the world's largest cities at that time. In 1767, the city was destroyed by the Burmese army, resulting in the collapse of the kingdom.

The impressive history of the city is still reflected in the cityscape. There are so many historical buildings or ruins from the heyday of Ayutthaya. We spend a lot of time exploring them by bike. Very impressive was a Buda from the year 1334. He is about 19 metres high and survived  the time nearly undamaged. He is located in the Wat Choeng Phanan.

Besides the temples, we liked the night market in Ayutthaya a lot. There were many delicious dishes. However, most of the people were not able to speak English. Therefore, it was quite difficult to order a vegetarian meal. Thanks to our "picture dictionary"(many greetings to Shorty) we could also solve this problem. As a reward, we had delicious dessert. Last but not least, we noticed, that in Ayutthaya are the coolest Tuck-Tucks in whole Thailand.

We travelled further to Lopburi, another city with a great history. However, today the city is most famous for the hundreds or thousands of monkeys, which live in the middle of the city. The local people feed them, especially during the Monkey Festival in November. Because they are not afraid of humans, they steal whatever food they can find from unwary diners. There are so many monkeys it was unbelievable. It was a very different experience :-)

Lopburi had also a really nice night market. Nevertheless, the highlight of the city was our accommodation. We stayed with a nice woman (homestay), who we met by accident on the night market. She had nice rooms and took care of us. Besides the accommodation, she had many other services. Michi got a nice haircut and Gerda enjoined a Thai massage. We had a couple of great days there :-)

At the end, we have some good news from Gerda. In Lopburi she had a job interview via Skype. During the interview, there were problems with the connection. Sometimes it was really hard for Gerda to understand the questions. This made the conversation very difficult. But in the end it didn’t matter, since Gerda got the job and is super happy :))))))

Now we are heading down south, where Toni is already waiting for us.

Viele Grüße / Cheers

Gerda & Michi
