Bocas del Toro

Hallo Leute,

unsere Weltreise hat nun Mittelamerika erreicht. Wir haben uns entschieden, dass wir nach unserer Landung in San Jose (Costa Rica) zunächst umgehend weiter nach Bocas del Toro (Panama) fahren. Wir haben dort erst einmal einen Spanischkurs besucht ...quasi directalmente ;-)

Our trip around the world has now reached Central America. After we have landed in San Jose (Costa Rica) we directly moved on to Bocas del Toro (Panama) to take some Spanish classes ... quasi directalmente ;-)

Die Fahrt nach Bocas del Toro war allein schon ein Erlebnis für sich. Zunächst einmal haben wir alle 15 Minuten angehalten (warum auch immer). An der Grenze mussten wir ca. 2 Stunden warten bis wir einen Stempel für die Einreise bekamen. Da Bocas del Toro eine Insel ist, muss man zwingend ein Wassertaxi nehmen. Die vielen Stopps und die Wartezeit an der Grenze führten dazu, dass wir mehr als 3 Stunden Verspätung hatten und wir eigentlich das letzte Wassertaxi nicht mehr erreichen konnten. "Zufällig" gab es jedoch ein Shuttle Service der mit dem Wassertaxi zusammenarbeitete und uns so noch rechtzeitig zum Wassertaxi bringen konnte, gegen eine extra Gebühr versteht sich! Wir hatten keine Wahl und mussten das Angebot annehmen. Am Ende sind wir dann gut auf der Insel angekommen und das ist ja schliesslich das Wichtigste. 

The trip to Bocas del Toro was an experience in itself. We stopped about every 15 minutes (we don´t know why). At the border we had to wait 2 hours until we got the required stamp. Since Bocas del Toro is an island we had to use a water taxi to get there. The frequent stops and the long waiting time at the border led to a delay of more than 3 hours. Due to our delay we were not able to catch the last water taxi. BUT "what a coincidence" there was a shuttle service which operated with the water taxi and which could guarantee, that we would catch the last water taxi, for an extra fee of course!!! We had to accept this kind offer. At the end we arrived safely on Bocas del Toro and that's ultimately the most important.

Auf Bocas haben wir dann fleißig Spanisch gelernt und die wenige Freizeit zur Besichtigung der Insel genutzt. Um zu beweisen, dass wir wirklich etwas gelernt haben, beschreiben wir jetzt mal unsere erste Aktivität auf der Insel in Spanisch... viel Spass :-)

In Bocas, we have learned Spanish and used our little free time to discover the island. To prove that we have really learned some Spansih, we describe our first activity on the island in Spanish ... have fun :-)

Tenemos aluiler de bicicletas. Fuimos a Playa de farol. El mar estaba muy tormentoso. Por lo tanto, que era demasiado peligroso para nadar allí (olas gigantes). Gerda tiene, sin embargo se aventuró un poco en el agua, lo que ha dado lugar aimágenes muy lindas ...

An einem anderen freien Nachmittag haben wir uns eine Forschungsstation auf der Insel angesehen. Die Forschungsstation betreibt Forschung mit sämtlichen Tieren und Pfanzen, die es auf der Insel gibt. Besonders beeindruckend fanden wir die "Verschwinde-Pfanze" (sie zieht sich zusammen, wenn man sie berührt), einen Seestern (wir konnten beobachten wie er sich dreht) und einen schwammartigen Fisch (sieht aus wie eine Gurke).

Another afternoon we went to a research station on the island. The institute does research with all kind of animals and plant, which live on the island. Especially a plant, which closes very fast when you touch it, a starfish (we could observe how he turned) and a fish (he looked like an cucumber) were very impressive.

Am Ende unseres Aufenthalt haben die Verantwortlichen der Spanischschule noch ein Grillfest veranstaltet. Es hat einfach köstlich geschmeckt... wie man hoffentlich auch sehen kann :-)

At the end of our stay we had a very nice barbecue. It was great  ... as you can hopefully see :-)

Auf Grund des Wetters wollten wir nach unserem Aufenthalt in Bocas del Torro direkt nach Nicaragua (es hat ab und an geregnet) fahren. Dazu mussten wir wieder nach San Jose (Costa Rica). Dieses Mal ging es an der Grenze (Panama nach Costa Rica) ziemlich schnell, dafür hatten wir mit dem Wetter Pech. Auf Grund von zwei Erdrutschen mussten wir einen riesen Umweg fahren, was natürlich wieder zu Verspätung führte... naja Reisen ist in Mittelamerika halt nicht immer ganz so einfach :-)

Due to the weather conditions we wanted to move directly to Nicaragua. Therefore, we had to return to San Jose (Costa Rica). This time, crossing the border was easy, unfortunately we were unlucky with the weather. Due to two landslides we had to make a huge detour, which led to a huge delay... well traveling in Central America is not always so easy :-)

Los Angeles

und wir sagen "Hello" again...

Unsere letzte Station in den USA führte uns nach Los Angeles. Allein die Fahrt nach Los Angeles war schon ein kleines Abenteuer für sich. Die Stadt ist ziemlich groß und weitläufig, dementsprechend viel Verkehr gibt es dort. Die Strassen sind teilweise siebenspurig (!!!), da muss man sich schon früh genug überlegen, wenn man abbiegen möchte - also Spontanität ist nicht ;-) - außer man möchte in kürzester Zeit sieben Spuren wechseln.

Our last stop in the United States was Los Angeles. The trip to Los Angeles was a small adventure itself. The city is quite large and spacious, therefore, traffic is at times terrible. Some of the highways have seven lanes (we're not used to seven lanes in Germany), therefore you have to decide quite some time ahead, when you want to leave the highway :-)

In Los Angeles haben wir zunächst Santa Monica/Venice Beach angeschaut. Am Pier von Santa Monica endet die berühmte Route 66. Ausserdem gibt es an diesem Pier ein Restaurant der "Bubba Gump Shrimp Company". Wem kommt denn der Name bekannt vor? "Lauf - Forrest - Lauf". Genau - diese Restaurantkette ist auf Grund des Filmes "Forrest Gump" entstanden. Der Strand war herrlich und zu unserer Überraschung fast menschenleer. Michi konnte sich mal wie ein richtiger Rettungsschwimmer fühlen - es fehlte nur noch die Boje! Ausserdem konnten wir den Skatern zuschauen und die Jungs am Muscle Beach bewundern.

Our first highlight in Los Angeles was Santa Monica/Venice Beach. The famous Route 66 also ends at the Santa Monica pier. There is also a restaurant of the "Bubba Gump Shrimp Company." Does this name ring a bell? "Run - Forrest - Run". Exactly - this restaurant chain was founded due to the movie "Forrest Gump". The beach was nice. Michi felt a bit like a lifeguard - just the buoy was missing and the red swimming trunk! We were also able to watch the skaters and the iron pumper at Muscle Beach.

Am zweiten Tag war Hollywood und Universal Studios angesagt. Wir haben uns dort natürlich den "Walk of Fame" angeschaut und ein paar Schnapschüsse gemacht. Ausserdem konnten wir Aufnahmen für eine Realityshow beobachten. Leider haben wir weder den Moderator noch die Models gekannt, daher wissen wir auch nicht was für eine Show das war. Kann uns einer von euch weiterhelfen?

On the second day we went to Hollywood and the Universal Studios. We walked (of course) the "Walk of Fame" and took some snapshots. Furthermore, we watch the recordings for a reality show. Unfortunately, we knew neither the moderator nor the models, therefore we don´t know what kind of show it was. Anyone has a guess?

Unser Abenteuer USA ist nun leider schon beendet. Wir hatten hier eine extrem tolle und ereignisreiche Zeit. Vielen Dank an die vielen Freunde, die wir im Laufe unserer Reise getroffen haben und die uns immer herzlich empfangen haben. 

Jetzt beginnt für uns das Abenteuer "Mittelamerika".

The adventure USA is now over. We had an extremely great time in the US. Many thanks to all the friends we've met during our trip and for the very warm welcome. Hope you come to visit us in Germany. 

Now we are looking forward to our adventure "Central America".

San Diego

Hallo Ihr Lieben,

da bisher alles so reibungslos geklappt hatte, hatten wir noch genügend Zeit San Diego zu besuchen. Diese tolle Stadt hat viel mexikanischen Einfluss, was an den Leuten, der Architektur und dem Wetter deutlich wird... es war wesentlich wärmer....JUHU und wir freuten uns.

Because everything went so smoothly, we were able to visit the great city of San Diego. The city has a lot of Mexican influence and much warmer weather, which we enjoyed a lot as you can imagine.

Zunächst haben wir dem "Gaslamp District" einen Besuch abgestattet. Der Gaslamp District ist das historische Zentrum San Diego's. Der Distrikt ist nicht nur Zentrum der Innenstadt sondern auch Mittelpunkt des Nachtlebens. Das Gebiet ist unter dem Namen "Gaslampenviertel" als ein historischer Stadtteil im National Register of Historic Places eingetragen. Der Aufstieg des Stadtviertels begann 1867, als Alonzo Horton Land in der Hoffnung kaufte, dass sich ein neues Stadtzentrum in der Nähe der Bucht bilden würde. Heute ist es einfach ein sehr schöner Stadtteil der an die Eleganz des vergangenen Jahrhunderts erinnert und uns dazu noch einen tollen Sonneruntergang geliefert hat.

First we visted the "Gaslamp District". The Gaslamp Quarter is the historic heart of San Diego, California. It is a 16,5 block historical neighborhood in Downtown San Diego and is the center of downtown night life. The area is listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places as Gaslamp Quarter Historic District. Its main period of development began in 1867, when Alonzo Horton bought the land in hopes of creating a new city center closer to the bay, and chose 5th Avenue as its main street. Today it is just a great neighborhood and we were lucky to catch a great sunset there.

Ein weiteres Highlight in San Diego war Old Town. Hier ist die Zeit einfach hundert Jahre stehen geblieben. Wir konnten uns dort Aufführungen anschauen und eine kostenlose Führung genießen (was den Schwaben natürlich gefällt).

Wissenswertes über Old Town:

Dieser Bezirk erinnert an die frühen Tage von San Diego und enthält viele historische Gebäude aus der Zeit von 1820 bis 1870. Der Park wurde 1968 gegründet. Fünf originale Lehmhäuser sind Teil des Parkes, der Geschäfte, Restaurants und Museen umfasst. Andere historische Gebäude sind ein Schulhaus, eine Schmiede, San Diegos erste Zeitung, ein Zigarren- und Pfeifenspeicher sowie ein Stall mit einer Schlittensammlung.

Wir hatten dort auf alle Fälle jede Menge Spass und haben sehr viel über die Anfänge von San Diego gelernt.

Another highlight in San Diego was Old Town. This part of the city looks like San Diego one hundred ago. We were able to watch performances and enjoyed a free guided tour (which the Swabians liked of course).  

Some facts about Old Town:

It commemorates the early days of the town of San Diego and includes many historic buildings from the period 1820 to 1870. The park was established in 1968. Five original adobe are part of the complex, which includes shops, restaurants and museums. Other historic buildings include a schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, San Diego's first newspaper office, a cigar and pipe store, houses and gardens, and a stable with a carriage collection.

We had a lot of fun there and learned a lot about the beginnings of San Diego.

Die Amerikaner kennen zwar keinen Fasching/Karneval/Fasnet, dafür gibt es aber Weihnachtsparaden. Per Zufall haben wir eine total abgefahrene Weihnachtsparade anschauen können. Dort gab es alles zu sehen - vom Funkenmariechen bis zum Hund der einen Kinderwagen schiebt :-)

The Americans dont´t have carnival parades as we have, nevertheless, they have Christmas parades. By chance, we were able to watch one of these christmas parades in Ocean Beach/San Diego. There was everything from majorettes to a dog who pushed a baby carriage :-)

Am Ende haben wir uns noch den weltbekannten Strand von San Diego mit den Surfern angeschaut. San Diego ist bekannt für seine absolut leckeren Fischtacos. Am Strand haben wir dann einen probiert. Dieser war so gut, dass wir uns gleich noch einen zweiten holen mussten :-). Wer also nach San Diego fährt MUSS auf jeden Fall einen/mehrere Fischtacos essen.

At the end of our time in San Diego we went to the Ocean Beach and watched the surfers. San Diego is also known for its absolute delicious fish tacos. On the beach we have one. Not enough, it was so good that we had to buy a second one :-). Make sure if you come to San Diego to have a fish taco - a MUST have ;-).
