You are probably wondering what we are doing in Auckland at the moment. We really enjoy living in here. Thanks to Gerda's internship 3 years ago, we already have a great social network here. Therefore, we often meet up with friends, explore the little secret corners in and around Auckland and enjoy this great country with its lovely people.
An einem herrlichen Nachmittag haben wir uns ein etwas verrücktes Rennen angeschaut. Wir waren beim "Rennen der Bedienungen" (klingt übersetzt etwas komisch). Im Duell mussten die Kellner und Kellnerinnen ein Tablett mit gefüllten Gläsern schnellstmöglich über eine ca. 60m lange Strecke transportieren. Dabei gab es Zeitstrafen für verschüttete Flüssigkeiten bzw. zerstörte Gläser. Die schnellere Bedienung (unter Berücksichtigung der Zeitstrafen) zog dann in die nächste Runde ein. Eine verrückte Sache, aber sehr nett Anzusehen :-)
On a Sunday afternoon, we went to a quite crazy competition. We watched the "Waitress Race". Two competitors had to transport filled glasses on a tablet over a 60m track as fast as possible. There was a time penalty for spilled liquids or destroyed glasses. The faster waiter (in consideration of the time penalty) moved into the next round. A crazy thing, but fun to watch :-)
Als gute (Ober-)Schwaben haben wir auf einer Weltreise natürlich auch kulturelle und kulinarische Verpflichtungen. Wir haben auf unserem Weg bereits viele spannende Kulturen und Lebensformen kennen lernen dürfen. In Auckland hatten wir nun die Gelegenheit, unseren Freunden die fantastische schwäbische Esskultur näher zu bringen. Dank Stefan hatten wir eine Spätzlepresse zur Verfügung (an dieser Stelle ein großes Dankeschön an Stefan). Einmal haben wir bei Caroline (Irland) und Frankie (China) einen großartigen Kässpätzleabend gemacht. Später haben wir noch Ali (Libanon), Jaesuk (Korea), Jan und Abi (Neuseeland), Natascha (Landsfrau) und Sascha (Bayern) mit Kässpätzle verwöhnt. Wie ihr also seht, haben wir das schwäbische Kulturgut weltweit verbreitet :-)
Since we are good Swabians, we had to show our friends in New Zealand our fascinating food culture. Thanks to Stefan, we had a "Spätzlepresse" (special equipment to produce self made pasta) and could prepare the famous self-made "Kässpätzle" dish (at this point a big thank you to Stefan). First we had a wonderful "Kässpätzle"-evening with Caroline (Ireland) and Frankie (China). Later we had the famous dish with Ali (Lebanon/Irak), Jaesuk (Korea), Jan and Abi (New Zealand), Natascha (also Swabian) and Sascha (Bavaria). You can see, that we have tried our best to show our Swabian food culture and culunary art to people from around the globe :-)

Aufmerksame Leser unseres Blogs wissen, dass Auckland auf vielen Vulkanen erbaut wurde. An einem schönen Sonntagmorgen haben wir Mount Eden bestiegen. Das ist von unserer Wohnung aus gesehen der am nächsten gelegene Vulkan. Für einen relativ kurzen Aufstieg wird man mit einer tollen Aussicht über Auckland belohnt :-)
Attentive readers of our blog know that Auckland is built on many volcanoes. We climbed Mount Eden on a beautiful Sunday morning. This is the nearest volcano from our flat. You get a wonderful view for a relatively short climb. Sounds like a good deal :-)
Mit unserem guten Freund Jaesuk haben wir das "Internationale Kulturfestival" besucht. Dort wurde landestypisches Essen sowie landestypische Kunst ausgestellt. Deutschland wurde auch durch einen Stand repräsentiert. Dort gab es, ihr könnt es euch schon denken, Bratwurst. Uns hat vor allem die französische Sektion gefallen. Ein sehr netter Mann hat uns dort das Spiel "Boule" gezeigt. Das Spiel ist mit Boccia vergleichbar. Ziel ist es, seine eigene Kugel möglichst nah am Ziel zu platzieren. Wie sich herausstellte, ist Jaesuk ein wahrer "Boule-Meister" :-). Auf einer anderen Bühne wurden lateinamerikanische Tänze aufgeführt. Wir nutzten die Gelegenheit, unsere Salsa Kenntnisse wieder ein wenig aufzufrischen.
We visited the "International Cultural Festival" with our good friend Jaesuk. The festival provided a great variety of country-specific food and art. There was also a German part. There you could get, we are sure you are not surprised, German bratwurst (fried sausages). We liked the French part a lot. A lovely man showed us how to play "Boule". The game is similar to Boccia. The aim is to bring your own ball as close as possible to the target. It turned out, that Jaesuk is a "master bouler" :-). On another stage Latin American dances were performed. We took this chance to refresh our salsa skills a bit.
Wie ihr sehen könnt, ist Auckland eine sehr multikulturelle Stadt. Dies zeigt sich durch viele unterschiedliche Events in denen die jeweiligen Landsleute ihre heimische Kultur zur Schau stellen. Unter anderem konnten wir die "französische Frühstückskultur" genießen. Mit Ali haben wir einen französischen Markt besucht auf dem es unglaublich viele leckere Dinge gab. Wir hatten die Auswahl zwischen Croissants, feinen Backwaren, verschiedenen süßen Aufstrichen und vielem mehr. Eins sollte man auf keinen Fall machen... frühstücken bevor man diesen Markt besucht :-)
As you can see, Auckland is a very multicultural city. People from all over the world show their culture in many different events. Among other things, we were able to enjoy the "French breakfast culture". We visited a French market with Ali, where we could buy a lot of delicious things. We had the choice between croissants, pastries, various sweet spreads and much more. One important rule needs to be considered... never ever have breakfast before you visit this delicious market :-)

Ansonsten sind wir natürlich sehr fleißig. Gerda arbeitet wieder bei SHORE/Whariki im CAYAD Projekt (http://www.cayad.org.nz/) und ist auch im 'Kids in the City' Projekt involviert. Gerda ist ganz happy mit ihrer Arbeit, ihren tollen Kollegen/innen und ihrem Aufgabenbereich. Sie hatte auch die Möglichkeit drei spannende CAYAD hui (Workshops) in Tolaga Bay, Whanganui und Auckland zu besuchen.
Otherwise, life keeps us both busy. Gerda is working for SHORE/Whariki research centre at Massey University again (yay) in the CAYAD project (http://www.cayad.org.nz/) and is also involved in conducting interviews/gather data for the 'Kids in the City' project. She is very happy with her work, having such great colleagues and enjoys her scope of duties a lot.
Michi lernt für sein Englischexamen (dieser Blog ist übrigens ein gutes Training für ihn) und arbeitet nebenbei noch in einem Fahrradladen. Er genießt es, von der Arbeit nach Hause zu kommen und richtig dreckige Hände zu haben :-)
Michi is studying hard for his English exam (by the way, this blog is a good exercise for him) and is working in a bicycle shop. He likes to have dirty hands when he comes back home from work and as both of us love cycling this is a very valuable :-). 
Eins können wir euch auf alle Fälle garantieren, uns wird es hier nicht langweilig.
One thing is for sure, we will not get bored in Auckland and absolutely love being here.
