Nach einem aufregenden Tag im Redwood National Park ging es weiter Richtung Süden nach Berkeley (Nahe San Francisco). Dort haben wir Markus und Mila besucht (Danke Euch Beiden für die tollen Tage in der Bay Area). Berkeley ist Sitz einer der bekanntesten Universitäten der USA. Der Campus der ‚University of California‘ ist für europäische Verhältnisse riesig. Von Markus haben wir eine Privatführung durch das angeschlossene Forschungszentrum, des Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (sein Arbeitsplatz) erhalten. Wir durften dort den Zyklotron (Teilchenbeschleuniger) bestaunen. Wir haben uns redlich bemüht seine Ausführungen zur Quantenphysik zu verstehen ;-). Nun sind wir auf jeden Fall um einiges schlauer. Danke Markus für die tolle Führung. Wir hoffen ihr besucht uns im Schwabaländle.
After an exciting day in the Redwood National Park we drove further south to Berkeley (close to San Francisco). There we visited Markus and Mila (Thank you both for the great days in the Bay Area). Berkeley is home to one of the most famous universities in the United States. The campus of the ‘University of California’ is huge compared to European standards. Markus gave us a private tour of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (his work), which is also located at the campus. We were allowed to gaze the cyclotron (particle accelerator). We have honestly tried to understand his remarks on quantum physics ;-). Now we are definitely a lot smarter when it comes to cyclotrons. A big THANK YOU to Markus for the awesome tour. We hope to see you guys in Swabia.
An den anderen Tagen haben wir bei bestem Wetter die Weltstadt San Francisco bewundert. San Francisco begeistert mit seinen Cable Cars, multikulturellem Flair, Chinatown und Little Italy, die weltberühmte Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, dem „Hippieviertel“ Haight Ashbury (in dem immer noch die 60er durchklingen), dem Golden Gate Park (in dem wir uns fast verlaufen hätten), der geschlungenen Lombard Street, Alcatraz, Ocean Beach und unzähligen weiteren schönen Ecken.
The following days, we explored the cosmopolitan city of San Francisco. Lucky us – the sun was always shining. We were enthusiastic about the city – the cable cars, the multicultural flair, Chinatown and Little Italy, the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, the “hippie district” Haight Ashbury, Golden Gate Park (where we almost got lost), the looped Lombard Street, Alcatraz, Ocean Beach, and countless other beautiful spots.
Thanksgiving haben wir auch in San Francisco verbracht. Michi hätte so gerne einen Turducken gegessen. Dies ist ein Hähnchen in einer Ente in einem Truthahn – da geht läuft wohl jedem Fleischliebhaber das Wasser im Mund zusammen (nicht Gerda!). Die Stadt war schon früh morgens voll mit kaufwütigen Menschen…da drehen die Amis völlig durch.
We also spent Thanksgiving in San Francisco. Michi would have loved to have eaten a Turducken. That is a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey. The next day was Black Friday and San Francisco was crowded with bargain hunters.
The DDR is now history…everywhere? No. There is a small restaurant/bar in San Francisco that keeps the DDR alive…thanks to Jason for the nostalgic experience.
